Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg began 2017 with a bold personal challenge: “to have visited and met people in every state in the US by the end of the year.”
So far, his whistlestop tour of the states certainly bears all the hallmarks of early political canvassing.
As part of the challenge, Zuckerberg reportedly wanted to meet longtime Democrats who voted for Trump in the last election and asked his team to reach out and find such people.
“I’ve spent significant time in many states already, so I’ll need to travel to about 30 states this year to complete this challenge,” the tech CEO wrote on his personal Facebook page on January 3.
“After a tumultuous last year, my hope for this challenge is to get out and talk to more people about how they’re living, working, and thinking about the future,” he added.
The Facebook boss met with Daniel Moore and his family at their rural home in Ohio on Friday.
Moore voted for Barack Obama twice, but then actively campaigned on behalf of then-candidate Donald Trump.
Moore told local news outlet WKBN that the Facebook CEO wanted to find out more about America’s so-called ‘Rust belt,’ which garnered so much attention during the 2016 presidential election campaign.
Zuckerberg has also visited Michigan and Wisconsin on his nationwide tour, making sure to take plenty of wholesome, salt-of-the-earth photos with everyday working-class Americans along the way.
Such a tour becomes even more conspicuous in light of unsealed court filings from a class-action lawsuit in 2016 in which Zuckerberg attempted to dilute shareholder power and afford himself permanent control of the $440 billion company.
Of particular note in the proceedings was a message sent to Zuckerberg by Marc Andreessen, one of Facebook’s most prominent investors, in which he raised the issue of “how to define the government service thing without freaking out shareholders that you are losing commitment.”
“It’s the thing people will point to on announcement and say ‘what the f**k are you guys doing agreeing to this’, particularly since… government service would require you to give up control of Facebook anyway and it’s a moot point,” said Andreessen, adding credence to speculation that Zuckerberg will make a run for political office at some point in the future.
In terms of broadening political appeal and widening a potential voter base, Zuckerberg has made a notable 180-degree turn on his religious stance in the past 12 months.
The entrepreneur previously declared himself an atheist, on Christmas Day no less (though Zuckerberg himself was raised Jewish), but has since tempered his position by stating that he believes “religion is very important.”
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has threatened to invade both Syria and Iraq in a surprise attack to flush out the presence of the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK).
“Turkey knows what to do and when to do it, we may come there overnight all of a sudden,” Erdogan said in a statement on Saturday.
Presstv.com reports:
The remarks came after more than a dozen PKK members were killed when Turkish military aircraft carried out two separate aerial attacks against the militants’ positions in Iraq’s semi-autonomous Kurdistan region.
The Turkish General Staff announced in a statement on Saturday that six PKK terrorists were killed around Sinat-Haftan area, while eight others were targeted in the countryside around Adiyaman.
The statement came as the Baghdad government has frequently demanded an immediate end to Ankara’s airstrikes against Kurdish militant in northern Iraq, denouncing the assaults as unacceptable and a violation of its sovereignty.
Turkey has stepped up its attacks against PKK positions in northern Iraq and its Syrian affiliate, Peoples’ Protection Units (YPG), in recent weeks.
Earlier this week, Turkish fighter jets bombed Kurdish forces in Syria and Iraq, drawing rebukes from the US State Department and the Pentagon.
The Turkish military said the April 25 attacks centered on Mount Sinjar in Iraq and Mount Karakoc in Syria.
The strike in Syria reportedly hit the area, where the headquarters of the US-backed YPG forces are located, killing and wounding an unspecified number of fighters.
Turkish military forces have been conducting ground operations as well as airstrikes against PKK positions in Turkey’s troubled southeastern border region and Iraq’s semi-autonomous Kurdistan region for nearly two years.
The campaign began following the July 2015 bombing in the southern Turkish town of Suruc, which claimed more than 30 civilian lives. Turkish officials held the Takfiri Daesh terrorist group responsible for the act of terror.
PKK militants, who accuse the Ankara government of supporting Daesh, launched a string of supposed reprisal attacks against Turkish security forces after the bomb attack, in turn prompting the Turkish military operations.

30 April 2017 – A plane carrying relief items has arrived in Luanda, Angola, to assist over 11,000 people who fled a recent surge violence in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), the United Nations refugee agency said today.
The aircraft landed Sunday morning from Dubai, carrying 3,500 plastic sheets as well as 100 plastic rolls to provide shelter during the rainy season, 17,000 sleeping mats, 16,902 thermal fleece blankets, 8,000 mosquito nets, 3,640 kitchen sets, 8,000 jerry cans and 4,000 plastic buckets. The Office of the UN High Commissioners for Refugees (UNHCR) will be airlifting more relief items to Angola in coming days.
“Arrivals are in urgent need of life-saving assistance including food, water, shelter and medical services,” said Sharon Cooper, UNHCR Regional Representative for Southern Africa in a press release. “UNHCR is also procuring food locally to support the most vulnerable persons including children, pregnant women and elderly.”
The brutal conflict in DRC's previously peaceful Kasai region has already displaced more than one million civilians within the country since it began in mid-2016.
The border is managed by the Angolan army. UNHCR has requested the Government to allow refugees to continue crossing the border, provide unhindered access to assist new arrivals, as well as not to return people fleeing the violence to the DRC.
Angola is currently hosting some 56,700 refugees and asylum-seekers, of whom close to 25,000 are from the DRC.
UNHCR Angola had an initial annual budget of $2.5 million to protect and assist some 46,000 people of concern. In response to the current emergency, UNHCR is appealing for a total of $5.5 million to provide immediate lifesaving assistance.

President Trump delivered remarks at a working-lunch with United Nations Security Council ambassadors at the White House. During the lunch, the president said the security council’s failure to adopt a resolution condemning Syria’s use of chemical weapons was a “great disappointment.” He also said the council must be prepared to impose additional and stronger sanctions on North Korea’s nuclear and ballistic program. close
